Washi tape for a planner: choose width before pattern

Give the tape one clear job

Before choosing a pattern, decide whether the tape will mark a section, label a temporary task or decorate a page edge. Those jobs use different amounts of space. A tape that looks attractive across a product photograph can overwhelm a small weekly box. Start with one repeatable use so you can judge whether a roll adds useful information to your planner.

The official mt US description says its tape can be torn by hand, repositioned and written on, and describes it as semi-transparent. Those are manufacturer descriptions rather than results of our testing. For a planner, the practical question is how a specific pattern and width interact with your page, pen and handwriting.

Measure the space the tape would cover

Measure the height of one planner box or the width of a margin. Compare that with the exact tape width in the product listing. In an illustrative 30 mm-high day box, a 15 mm band occupies half the height, while a 6 mm band occupies one fifth. This simple division can reveal whether decoration would remove more writing space than you can spare.

Cut strips of ordinary scrap paper at the candidate widths and lay them on an unused page without adhesive. Write a typical day’s appointments around them. If the layout becomes cramped, choose a narrower option or place the band outside the writing area. You can perform this test before purchasing any tape, using dimensions rather than a styled photograph.

Test labels and removal on expendable paper

For a written label, prefer a sample whose lettering you can read at your normal viewing distance. A pattern can compete with a short word, and overlapping translucent layers can alter the appearance. After purchase, try your own pen on a small piece and let it dry before touching it. We have not tested ink drying, smudging or readability across the range.

Repositionable does not establish compatibility with every paper, coating or length of use. Our conservative suggestion is to test a small piece on an expendable sheet or an unimportant part of the same paper before putting tape over information you need to keep. If removal damages that sample, use a separate insert instead. Do not treat this guide as an archival-preservation claim.

Estimate consumption before adding more rolls

Use planned strip length to compare roll quantities. If your routine needs four strips of 8 cm per week, that is 32 cm per week. A hypothetical 7 m roll contains 700 cm: 700 ÷ 32 = 21.875 weeks, or 21 complete weeks before allowing for torn ends, mistakes and other uses. Replace those numbers with the length of the actual listing and your own layout; they are not specifications for every mt roll.

Start with the width and pattern that passed your mockup. The mt US store states that all sales are final, so a large speculative assortment is a less forgiving first order. Check its current store policy and the selected roll’s dimensions before payment. A useful first purchase should make an existing planning task easier, even if you never build a collection.
